What is generative ambient music?
Generative music is music created by a system of rules as it plays, rather than recorded once and played back. Because each note is chosen in the moment, it can run indefinitely without repeating. ONDA is a generative music player: it composes ambient music live on your device from authored sound worlds, so every session is new.
Where the idea comes from
Brian Eno popularised the term in the 1990s for music made by setting up a system and letting it play, building on earlier experiments with tape loops of different lengths. Today generative music runs in software: a set of rules decides what happens next, inside limits a composer sets.
How ONDA composes
Each ONDA soundscape is an authored sound world: a key, a harmonic language, a set of instruments, a room and a pace. When you press play, a composer running in your browser through the Web Audio API voice-leads chord pads, a bass line and short melodic phrases inside those limits, and arranges sections and key changes over time.
Nothing is streamed. All the sound is synthesised on your device, which is why ONDA works offline and why it never comes to the end of a file.
Generative is not the same as AI-generated
ONDA does not use a model trained on other people’s recordings. Its music comes from hand-written musical rules and sound design, closer to an instrument that plays itself than to a song generator.
Why it suits ambient listening
- No loop seams: the music keeps its character while the details change.
- Any length: a ten-minute break or an eight-hour night.
- Adjustable: the music can respond to your settings as it plays.
- Light: no audio files to download or stream.
Questions
Does generative music repeat?
It does not have to. Because each note is chosen as it plays, a well-built generative system can run for hours without repeating a passage.
Is generative music made by AI?
Not necessarily. Generative music is any music produced by a system of rules. ONDA uses hand-written musical rules and sound design, not a trained AI model.
What apps make generative music?
Several apps generate ambient music, including Endel and ONDA. ONDA runs in the browser and composes on your device, so it needs no download or stream.
Is ONDA free?
Yes, during the preview. You can listen for 10 minutes straight away with no sign-up, then create a free account with just an email address to keep listening.
